How to Make Mini Sessions Less Stressful for Your Family
Mini sessions are a fantastic way to capture beautiful family memories in a short, sweet burst of time—usually just 15 to 20 minutes. But let’s be honest: trying to get everyone dressed, out the door, and camera-ready can feel overwhelming, especially with young kids in the mix. As a family photographer here in Atlanta, Georgia, I’ve helped hundreds of families prepare for mini sessions, and I’m here to tell you: it doesn’t have to be stressful!
Here are a few tried-and-true ways to make your mini session easy, fun, and even enjoyable:
Start planning outfits at least a week before your session. Personally, I start pulling pieces together the moment I book a session - starting with what I love and already own and having plenty of time for shopping to fill in the gaps. Avoid last-minute scrambling by laying out everyone's clothes—including shoes and accessories—the night before. Choose outfits that are comfortable, coordinate well together (not matchy-matchy!), and suit the season.
A hungry child is an unhappy child—especially during photos! Make sure your kids have a light snack before the session and bring an easy (non-messy!) treat or favorite toy as a reward afterward.
Plan to arrive about 10 minutes early so you’re not rushing. This gives everyone a moment to settle in, fix any hair or outfit quirks, and get used to the setting. In and around Atlanta, many mini sessions take place in beautiful spots like Winn or Lenox Park, so consider this a little bonus time to enjoy the scenery.
Mini sessions move fast. We may not get a perfectly posed photo with everyone smiling—and that’s okay! Candid moments often end up being the most cherished. Let your kids be themselves, and trust your photographer to capture the magic in between.
Your energy sets the tone. If you're calm and smiling, your kids are more likely to follow suit. Don’t stress if someone isn’t cooperating perfectly—we’ll pivot. I've been a photographer in the Atlanta Metro Area for almost ten years now and am here to tell you, I will get great shots either way.
Let your photographer know if there’s anything they should be aware of—shy kiddos, special needs, or must-have shots. I always appreciate when families give me a little insight—it helps me personalize the experience and make everyone feel at ease.
Final Thoughts:
Mini sessions are meant to be fun, quick, and memorable. With a little preparation and a relaxed mindset, you’ll walk away with beautiful images—and a surprisingly pleasant experience. I’m here to make it easy for you every step of the way.
