How to Prepare Your Toddler for a Mini Session (Without Losing Your Mind 😉)
Let’s be honest—toddlers are amazing and adorable, but they’re also… unpredictable. One minute they’re giggling and snuggling, the next they’re lying on the ground refusing to wear shoes.
As a photographer who’s worked with lots of little ones, I promise your toddler doesn’t need to be perfectly behaved to get beautiful photos. But with just a little planning, you can help set them up for success—and make the whole experience smoother (and even fun!) for everyone involved.
Here’s how to prep your toddler for your upcoming mini session:
1. Keep It Low-Key
Talk about the session like it’s going to be a fun little outing. Avoid putting pressure on them to “smile” or “be good.” Instead, say something like,
“We’re going to meet a friend who’s going to take our picture while we play!”
Keeping the tone light and playful helps ease anxiety—for both of you.
2. Pick the Right Timing
Mini sessions are quick, but timing still matters. If possible, book a session that’s not during nap time or mealtime. A well-rested, well-fed toddler is far more likely to cooperate (or at least not melt down on sight).
3. Dress Them in Something Comfy
Choose an outfit that looks cute but isn’t itchy, tight, or fussy. If they’re uncomfortable, they’ll let us know—loudly.
Bonus tip: bring a backup outfit just in case of spills, drool, or unexpected messes!
4. Bring a Favorite Toy or Snack
A small toy, stuffed animal, or comfort item can help them feel secure in a new environment. A non-messy snack (like mini puffs or fruit snacks) can work wonders for short attention spans and low blood sugar.
Pro tip: avoid chocolate or anything sticky—we don’t want to bribe them into a sugar-stained shirt!
5. Let Go of “Perfect”
The best photos often come from the imperfect, unplanned moments—your toddler clinging to your leg, giving you a spontaneous hug, or belly laughing at something totally random. Let them be themselves! I’m not expecting a flawless performance, just real moments.
Trust me—those are the ones you’ll love most when you look back.
6. Arrive a Few Minutes Early
Give your little one time to warm up to the setting and say hi. Rushing into a session can leave everyone frazzled. A little buffer time can make a big difference in how relaxed your toddler feels.
7. Trust the Process
I’ve worked with toddlers who cried, ran in circles, and refused to smile—and we still got amazing photos. Don’t stress if things feel chaotic in the moment. I know how to work with their energy (and distract them just long enough to get the shot).
Final Thoughts:
Mini sessions are meant to be short and sweet. With a little prep and a lot of patience, your toddler can absolutely rock it—and I’ll be right there to capture every silly, sweet, chaotic, beautiful moment along the way.
