Dance portraits are a wonderful way to celebrate your child’s hard work, talent, and love for movement. Whether your little dancer is just starting out or has been twirling across the stage for years, preparing for their portrait session helps ensure the experience is smooth, stress-free, and fun. Here are some simple tips to make the most of your child’s dance photo session.
Costumes are the highlight of dance portraits. Make sure your child’s outfits are:
Clean and wrinkle-free – A quick steam or iron makes all the difference.
Complete – Don’t forget tights, ballet shoes, tap shoes, or any accessories the costume requires.
It’s also a good idea to pack an extra leotard in case you want a second look. The family below chose to also have their daughters photographed in the mandatory class leotards. The studio they take classes at has each level wear a certain color, so the leotards were symbolic of where each girl was on her dance journey.
Dance portraits often call for a polished look.
Hair – Secure buns, braids, or ponytails neatly and bring along extra pins, hairspray, and elastics for touch-ups.
Makeup – Even minimal makeup (a little blush, lip gloss, or tinted moisturizer) helps your child’s features stand out. For younger dancers, keep it natural and age-appropriate.
Accessories – Double-check headpieces, tiaras, or hair bows are ready to go.
Think of it like a backstage kit:
Extra tights (in case of snags or runs)
All dance shoes
Safety pins and double-sided tape for costume fixes
A small snack and water bottle
Baby wipes for quick clean-ups
Having these items handy helps reduce stress if anything goes wrong.
A relaxed, confident child makes for the best photos. Encourage them to:
Practice poses at home – Go over a few favorite steps or poses from class so they feel confident striking them during the session. My dancers often love to do poses from their actual recital piece. The poses are meaningful and they already feel confident doing them.
See it as fun, not pressure – Remind them that portraits are a celebration, not a performance.
Rest up – A good night’s sleep helps with focus, energy, and genuine smiles.
Parents set the tone! If you’re relaxed and enthusiastic, your child will feed off that energy. Let them know you’re proud of their effort and that this is a special experience to honor their growth as a dancer.
Preparing for a dance photo session is about more than just costumes—it’s about creating a joyful memory your child can look back on with pride. With the right preparation, their personality and passion for dance will shine through every portrait.
